Each hormone has its role but hormones work best when they are in balance with each other. In Chinese medicine, we call this Yin and Yang. Estrogen and Progesterone are good example of this. If one is out of balance, it throws the other off balance. The symptoms of too much estrogen ("estrogen dominance") are the same as the symptoms of too little progesterone. Too much estrogen causes fluid retention, breast tenderness, and heavy menstrual periods. Too little progesterone causes the exact same symptoms!!!
When using hormone therapy several things are key to a successful outcome. The first rule is always use bio-identical hormones. This means replacing hormones with the naturally occurring hormones, not synthetic drugs that act like hormones. The second rule is to replace all the hormones that are deficient. This means for menopausal hot flashes, poor sleep, vaginal dryness, loss of libido, bone loss (osteoporosis), depression, and memory loss replace ESTROGEN, PROGESTERONE, and if needed TESTOSTERONE too. In men, testosterone is the predominant sex hormone that needs replacement if the level is low.
If mild fatigue is present, and if it is accompanied by hair loss, or feeling cold or constipated, replace THYROID hormones if they are low. For some people both T3 and T4 need to be replaced for the person to feel best.  If your energy level is really low, test for low levels of the adrenal gland hormones, DHEA and HYDROCORTISONE. If sleep problems persist with hormone replacement, another bio-identical hormone, MELATONIN, is often helpful if taken at bedtime. Your doctor can learn practical, detailed information about hormone balancing by reading my soon to be published book "FOR YOUR DOCTOR".

Hormone Pellets PDF Print E-mail

Hormone pellets are a unique delivery system for the bio-identical hormones testosterone and estradiol. While most men and women who use bio-identical hormones use creams, gels, patches, tablets, drops, or injections, the pellets are an alternative when the other methods prove unsatisfactory or ineffective.  The pellets are about the size of a grain of rice.  In a 5 minute office procedure, the pellets are placed under the skin of your buttock.  The pellets slowly dissolve over 3-4 months and they deliver a constant amount of hormone every day. For women, the custom is to use one estradiol and one testosterone pellet. Most women also take a bio-identical PROGESTERONE capsule at bedtime. For men, several testosterone pellets are used.

Testosterone injections PDF Print E-mail

TESTOSTERONE deficiency is a common problem for men.  The signs and symptoms include fatigue, loss of sex drive, depression, erectile dysfunction and irritability.  I treat men with testosterone creams, gels, pellets, and injections but I get the best results using injections.  The medical textbooks recommend testosterone injections into the buttocks muscle once every 2-4 weeks.  This is a big mistake!  The reason is that when testosterone injections are spread this far apart (every 2-4 weeks), a "roller-coaster" effect occurs.
